The global nature conservation organization World Wildlife Found (WWF) once again launches the motto and the Municipality of Loulé once again joins the “Earth Hour”. Between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on the 26th of March, as in various parts of the world, the lights will go out in this county, in a call to attention to the threat of climate change.
The Town Hall, Engº Duarte Pacheco Building/Municipal Assembly, Engº Duarte Pacheco Monument, Loulé Municipal Market, Louletano Cineteatro, Loulé Castle Wall (Loulé), Quarteira Municipal Center and buildings of the parish councils of S. Sebastião, S. Clemente, Quarteira, Almancil, Salir, Querença, Tôr, Benafim, Boliqueime, Alte and Ameixial are the public spaces where the lighting will go out during this “Earth Hour”. It is 60 minutes where, alongside the action of the public administration, it is also intended that people have a proactive attitude, so this initiative extends to all families, so that, with a simple gesture, they join this movement. In a creative way, it is intended that 'Louletanos' join this cause with individual events, which can be shared with the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, in association with WWF, through social networks or to the following email anp@ nature-portugal.org.
This year, "Earth Hour" will have the theme "Restoration of Nature" and the concept "Connect to the Planet", intending to once again harness the power of citizens around the world to better respond to the impacts of the climate emergency, considered as a one of the biggest environmental, social, economic and even health challenges that the planet faces, with the worsening and greater frequency of extreme weather events. Loulé is no exception and here, like in other locations, the projections for the coming years have merited reflection and concrete responses, such as the recent Loulé Municipal Climate Action Plan.
It should be noted that “Earth Hour” had its inaugural moment in 2007.
“We could not be left out of this initiative which, despite being symbolic, meets what we aspire to for the Planet and for our county: a better future in environmental terms, where new generations can live in full harmony with nature and with the world around us”, considers the mayor Vítor Aleixo.
