Learn more about the project ‘DESAFIO ALFArroba’

10 Nov 2021

The 'DESAFIO ALFArroba' project started on the 23rd of June, at the headquarters school of the Almancil School Group - Escola EB2,3 Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho, the result of a collaboration between that school, the Loulé City Council (CML) , the Parish Council of Almancil (JFA) and the University of Algarve (UAlg), counting on that date with the presence of the President of the CML, the Councilor, the President of the JFA, the Teacher Manuela Moreira da Silva (UAlg ) and with a group of technicians from the Municipality's Environment and Climate Action area.

This project, in line with the Municipal Climate Action and Environmental Safeguards Policy, involved delivering samples of young carob trees to the students of this school, who took care of them during the summer school holidays, monitoring their development and documenting the experience through a online tool.

Thus, yesterday, November 9th, at Jardim das Comunidade and at that school, there was an action to plant the best cared for carob trees by 8th grade students (now in 9th grade).

According to the monitoring carried out by the students, the stalk of some carob trees grew up to 62 cm and up to 86 new leaflets developed.

The remaining carob trees suitable for planting will be integrated by the CML in other schools in the Group or in other public places, and all the trees will be georeferenced and the students who took care of them will be informed of their respective location.

Remember that this tree represents a very precious natural element from an environmental point of view, and the municipality of Loulé considers it an excellent ally in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Each student who takes care of the distributed carob trees was given a pencil with coriander seeds, so that they can continue their commitment to the environment and start their own vegetable garden.
