On the 14th of May, the International Climate Day is celebrated, an event that the Municipality of Loulé will mark through a diverse set of activities aimed at different target audiences, which will last for a week.
The initiatives start on Saturday, with two recreational activities aimed at children, young people and their families. At 10:30 am, at the Pole of the Municipal Library of Quarteira, the “Bora lá à Biblioteca | CLIMAAT100”, where the younger ones will be able to hear a story about climate change in Loulé, in which the boy Diogo and his restless cat Carapau take them on a journey through time and teach them, in a comic and light way, how to fight climate change in your county.
At the same time, in Foz do Almargem and Trafal (Quarteira), families are challenged to participate in “Bioblitz e Alterações Climáticas”, a citizen-science activity, in which the participants, through the use of mobile applications (Biodiversity4all; iNaturalis) collaborate in the identification and recording of observations of species in this (future) Local Natural Reserve. On Monday, the 16th, the 7th Meeting of the Local Council for Monitoring the Climate Action of Loulé takes place, a body made up of more than 70 entities, whose mission is to contribute to the promotion and monitoring of the local climate action policy, in the sense of more efficient, participatory and lasting governance. This Council has already promoted several moments of debate and reflection, technical training initiatives and promoted pilot projects in progress. It is intended that this is a moment of reflection and sharing on the work of the Municipality within the scope of the Local Policy for Climate Action, which is organized in two moments. In the morning, a plenary session will take place at Cineteatro Louletano, where the recently approved Loulé Municipal Climate Action Plan (PMAC de Loulé) will be mentioned, as well as other projects that the Municipality is developing in the context of climate action. During the afternoon, the workshop “What is the contribution of key actors to local climate action?” will take place, in which participants will integrate thematic work tables (Water, Forest and Biodiversity and Energy).
On May 17th, International Recycling Day, the program starts with an awareness-raising action on water efficiency at Escola Prof. Sebastião Teixeira (Salir), part of the Scholar Energy Community project, and during which flow reduction devices will be installed in the school's faucets and showers, equipment that will allow a reduction of more than 50% in water consumption in these places.
That same morning, at 11 am, at the Loulé Municipal Library, an awareness-raising action on waste management will take place, aimed at technicians from the Loulé City Council. To end the day dedicated to recycling, at 9 pm, at Casa do Meio Dia (Loulé) there will be a Lecture “ReciclArte”. Aimed at the general public, and having as speakers Inês Reis (Inframoura), Joana Dias (Loulé Design Lab) and the creatives of Loulé Design Lab, this lecture's main motto is to make known the INFINITY project, which associated recycling, transformation, environment and solidarity, through joint reflection on the work carried out. The 19th of May is a day dedicated to young people, taking place, at 11:45 am, an action of the “Desafio Alfarroba”, a project that involves the Escola EB 2,3 Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho (Almancil), and at 2:30 pm, the Lecture "Climate Action in the Municipality of Loulé", held at Loulé Secondary School, and addressed to this school community.
To close the event, on May 20th, in the morning, the act of signing the public deed of the constitution of the Adapt.local Association - Network of Municipalities for Local Adaptation to Climate Change will take place. As part of an informal partnership, whose Coordinating Council is chaired by the Municipality of Loulé, and which involves around 30 municipalities nationwide, as well as higher education institutions, research centres, non-governmental organizations and companies, with the aim of boost local adaptation to climate change in Portugal, Adapt.local formalizes itself as a non-profit private law association, with an associative nature, with the purpose of boosting local adaptation to climate change in Portugal. Its role is to promote a continuous process of adaptive planning that increases the capacity of Portuguese municipalities and other entities, public or private, to incorporate adaptation to climate change in their policies and instruments, affirming the importance of the local scale for the design and implementation of more effective, efficient and equitable adaptation solutions.
